Is the iPad proof that User-Led Innovation (and OneEyeDeer) is doomed?

Intersting story in the NYT today about how the iPad, and Apple products more generally I guess, are an example of how the "auteur model of innovation" (where one powerful runs the whole process) has led to exceptional results.

The author, Steve Lohr, also sites Avatar (now the highest grossing film of all time) as another example.

The vibe of the story is that in a world of crowd-sourcing/open innovation, big hits are often generated by a visionary with a plan.

To be clear, there's validity in that argument. I don't think anyone would disagree.

That having been said, it doesn't mean that user-led/open/crowd-sourced innovation is doomed.

Rather, use-led innovation (we'll focus on this one) has shown itself to be an incredibly powerful and somewhat under-utilised source of innovation. It's this under-utilisation that OneEyeDeer is trying to address by using the inherent ability of the Internet to reduce information and sharing costs.

It's that simple.

The problem user-led innovation (ULI) has is that the process is not as sexy or as flamboyant as a guy in a black polo saying "one more thing" and pulling an incredible piece of hardware out from nowhere, while the world waits in anticipation.

It's a long slow process of trial and error that is open to the world. No sudden displays of genius here. Rather, you get to see the innovation process in its full, ebbing and flowing glory. And like the tide it resembles, the truth is that user-led innovation has far more potential than a sudden storm-like event of an iPad launch, or a movie release.

That's because ULI (or the OneEyeDeer version of ULI, at least) aims to connect people from varying background with varying skills, knowledge and experience. From there they can continue to connect or they can branch off and take their pre-existing skills, and new-found knowledge, and work on even more issues.

What's more, we aim to take that open knowledge and break it down into bits that are re-usable. The ability to get scale from your, and my, effort cannot be underestimated and has the potential, whether through OneEyeDeer, or some other competitor down the track, to revolutionise innovation as we know it.

That's really at the heart of why we're so passionate about OneEyeDeer. It's because the process feeds back into the community and helps the community itself grow.

So, is the iPad proof that OneEyeDeer is doomed to fail?

I don't think so.

Instead I think it's proof that there are many different ways to "innovate". While many of us will never have the capacity, or chance, to be a Steve Jobs, we all have the opportunity to be part of OneEyeDeer.

And the truth is that, despite the hype, user-led innovation (and OneEyeDeer) has the potential to have a far greater impact on the lives of more people than an iPad or movie ever will.

Here's hoping it gets the chance it deserves.

Latest Release (v0.7) of OneEyeDeer is out

The latest release of OneEyeDeer has hit the streets and there are a bunch of changes on both the front and back end.

Those changes have come as a result of feedback we've had from the community more generally and from all the excellent students at the University of Sydney who trialled OED as a learning tool a couple of months ago.

We're really happy with the direction OED is taking and have a bunch of other sweet updates that we're busily working away on.

In the meantime, though, below is a list of the main changes in v 0.7.

OneEyeDeer Update

Just realised it's been a few months since our last post, which is a bit slack.

So here's an update on what we've been up to:

  1. The most important thing is that we've opened up the site to the public. There's been no launch, no hoo-ha, not even an email to existing users. That will all come when we finalise a couple of things we're working on. In the meantime, you can now jump on the site at www.oneeyedeer.com
  2. So what are those things we're working on? Well, it revolves around making the site more robust, and adding some back-end smarts that are part of our grander plan. I know that's all quite vague, but no point in promoting something that's not available yet, right?
  3. Actually, if you want to play with something new-ish go check out the communities. We've updated them so they're now like independent mini sites. Everything, e.g. the navigation bar, post buttons etc. is all contextual to the community you're in rather than the site as a whole. I don't know this for sure, but I reckon communities are going to play a large part in OED's success so we're working hard to make them right. check them out and let us know what you think.

That's it for now. Promise to keep the posts (much) more frequent

An Interview with top community member 'ct8im'

We really love speaking with community members to find out what you like about the site and what you don't.

Here's an interview we did with top user 'ct8im' about his experiences on the site.

We'll be contacting more of you to hopefully do some quick interviews in the near future, so keep an eye out for our emails.

Now, onto the interview...

  • Describe OneEyeDeer (OED) in your words?
hate it. post it. fix it.

  • What makes you take time out of your day to contribute to OED?
Its quite rewarding following a issue your interested in, seeing the different thread of ideas. A better toothbrush holder is #1 on my watch list.

  • Favourite feature?
I like being able to comment on everything.

  • Least favourite feature?
I get frustrated with the site navigation at times.

  • What would you love to see on OED?
    More integration with mypad.

  • Why would you recommend this site to your friends?
Because we all have issues with things, they just complain about it, I say do something about it.

Thanks a million, ct8im :)

Latest Release (v0.6) of OneEyeDeer is Up

Wow - it's only been 3 weeks since we dropped the last version of OneEyeDeer and there's already been an amazing amount of activity on the site.

A big thanks to each and every one of you who has taken the time to jump on the site.

Now, while you guys were working hard on the site, so were we! The latest version of the site has been released and is ready for you to play with.

Below are the main changes we've made. I've highlighted some of the big things so you know what to look for :)

As usual, thanks for playing a part in helping make OneEyeDeer better. We really appreciate it.
